PowderPlay
T.
LeClerc is an industry insider's secret, with products prized by top
models, make-up professionals and French stars from Catherine Deneuve and
Brigitte Bardot (left) to Isabelle Adjani. The company's pressed powder
compact has been long been considered indispensable, but the new Loose
Powder Translucide looks set to shake that up. One caveat: the lid virtually
explodes the first time when you try to open it. (Call 1-800-788-4731 for
inquiries.)
TheSwedeLife
The Face Stockholm
Winter 2000 makeup range is meant to evoke “snow and ice”, but it combines
“Dignity” highlighter’s translucent white cream, with eyeshadows in olive-green
“Power" and dusky, coffee-colored “Liberty." Sounds like one crazy-colored
Christmas. Kohl “Gra” eyeliner lends a beaten, broken, Helena Bonham-Carter
in Fight Club look, and “Tio” Galaxy glitter adds a layer of Ziggy Stardust.
Top it off with the "Desert" lipstick in matronly coral and you’ll fit
in anywhere.
UrbanOutfitter
Like
you need another reason to wear Urban Decay make-up? Please, with
colors like “Gangrene” and “Toxin”, what’s not to love? Their new "Sparkle
Shimmer Kits" come in the cutest keepsake box, filled with two multi-purpose
loose powders you can sprinkle on anywhere—for eyes, shoulders, cheeks,
even above the belly-button ring—as well as a soft puff to dab it on with,
and a matching scented glitter candle. The "Girls Who Rock Mini Lip Gunk
Set" celebrates the debut of five new rocker girls with smallish, but not
tiny, versions of their ever-popular "Lip Gunk” (not quite lipstick, but
not quite lipgloss either). It looks best slightly smudged. Colors include
"Area 51", "Big Bang" and "YDK." Definitely not for the lipliner neurotic.
LitGloss
Stila is for Hollywood starlet types with a penchant for inspirational quotes from Emily Dickinson and Amelia Earhart. Its newest products include Flaunt Body Glitter, a nod to the current obsession with all things
glimmery, as well as the Convertible Color in Poppy compact which can be
applied on cheeks and lips. Lip Polish in Varnish and Sheen has the same
effect. And super-sheer not-quite-pink Lip Gloss in Blush is just the thing
to go with old standbys "Barefoot Contessa" (purple-and-gold-flecked) and
"Irma La Douce" (moss green with gold). The Stila concept is to "take
fashion colors and make them wearable." Like, didn't Edith Wharton say that
first?
Fete,Don’tFailMeNow
Coffee for your
face? Lendemain de Fete (“After the Party”) is made of caffeine
and menthol and miraculously erases the results of a full night's work
(marathon drinks, chain-smoking, fatigue brought on by non-committal men)
so that you don't scare your colleagues the next day. Dubbed "shock treatment”
for “mornings when waking up is tough", its natural wheat and soybean-based
proteins stretch and firm puffy, sagging skin. Louis Vuittons under your
eyes? No fear, a plant extract decongests, preventing circles and pouches
from forming. Let the next party begin!
(Note:
We've sung the praises of this must-have product before, and will continue
to do so until the company sends us a free caseload to last our party-weary
asses well into the next millennium!)
SuiGenerous
Now that Anna
Sui has expanded from the catwalk to the cosmetics counter, she has
graced us with a make-up line to complement her Goth-girl-hippie designs.
There are mix-and-match mascara colors, groovy "eye gloss" in deep berry
shades, as well as her signature purple and lavender palette, and face
powder packaged in an antique-looking snuff box. Everything would look
at right at home on a vampire's vanity table.

Eyes may be the
window to the soul, but lips are the doorway to the bedroom. Here’s how
to lay out the welcome mat.

MedicLipTreatmentScrubbyAlchemy
You know exfoliation
is essential, but did you know it applied to lips as well? Rich with jojoba
beads, Medic’s lip scrub removes dead layers and seals cracked valleys
to reveal perfectly smooth, chap-free lips. Pucker up, baby.
LipPlumpbyBeneFit
So you’re not Esther
Canadas, and collagen treatments aren’t quite in this year’s budget. Opt
for BeneFit’s Lip Plump instead. At $15, the flesh colored lip “primer”
will give you a full, smoldering pout without turning you into Goldie Hawn.
StilaLipGloss
Matte lips are so
out your grandmother can’t remember them. For dewy, flirty, shiny and deliciously
smackable “wet” lips, Stila is the grown-up girlie’s answer to yesterday’s
Bonnie Bell. With just a hint of color, it appears translucent. Lips go
so light they glow in the dark—just the thing your honey needs to find
you in those dark bars and clubs.
Kiehl’sLipBalm#1
Before tucking in,
slather on Kiehl’s Lip Balm Numero Uno. Lose the gnarly menthol drugstore
brand and switch to this yummy, clean-smelling solution. This balm is the
bomb.
MoistickbyBlissSpa
From the label:
“A solid moistick is quite unlikely to explode all over everything else
in your suitcase. So not only is it practical, but it decreases the occurrence
of ‘angry brow furrow’ (an unglamorous precursor to facial wrinkling, most
often caused by the discovery of leaking cosmetic ingredients in travel
bags).” You heard the lady. |

After
the treatment, you’re led to what is arguably one of the best stocked shower
rooms in the world, and later to the equally well equipped hair salon.
Aveda devotees will think they’ve died and gone to the big warehouse in
the sky when they see the vast amount of stock on offer, including the
customizable Personal Blends range and my personal favorite, the Enlightenment
Blonding System. The Institute is also a great learning center—everything
from blow-drying workshops to courses teaching you how to massage your
partner or baby are available. |

In fairness, my
skin felt very smooth immediately after my visit and I have heard no disparaging
comments about the place or its treatments (in fact the other clients I
spoke to verged on rhapsodic) but I left the Aveda Institute feeling like
I hadn’t ordered the best dish on the menu. HS |

SpotlightSkin
TonePerfector
For anyone who wants
additional ammunition in their battle for beauty, Estee Lauder has enlisted
the services of optical technology in its new uber-cream, Spotlight Skin
Tone Perfector. Best applied on top of your regular moisturizer, and underneath
makeup, the lotion uses "micro-prisms" to reflect light away from imperfections
so that even the pastiest drag queen can look like a screen siren. Titanium
and mica platelets work by upping the reflection of red light and absorbing
the green—which any diva who’s ever had to perform under colored spots
will tell you is a good thing. This blockbuster of a cream promises not
only to restore radiance to your skin, but to fight everything abnormal
pigmentation to pollution. What a star! We're ready for our close-up… |
