We're not saying that the man behind anvers, parfumeur Ulrich Lang, has a crush on his "muse," Belgian art dealer Roger Szmulewicz. But he did create a fragrance inspired by the guy and stuck his fetching mug on the box. Sure, Roger's cute (though he has "doesn't put the seat down" written all over his face, if you ask us), but blow past him and get to the juice within, because there's the real treat. BD sampled this fresh, slightly peppery eau de toilette in the company of a gentleman friend and the effect was the same on both of us: "I want that!" No matter that it's a men's cologne; we doubt Ulrich and Roger mind either. 3.4 oz for $75 at 888-AEDES-15.

Andrew and Sally Brunger didn't simply whimper in their post-9/11 tub dreaming of escaping New York, but created a business out of it. The gels, salts, soaps and scrubs of their chic little gender-neutral line (sensing a theme here?) called Köl are structured on four "destination scents:" grapefruity Curacao; grassy, cucumbery Picnic (named for Sheep's Meadow); fig-and-myrrh-infused Bethlehem and our favorite, clove-y El Maroc (Marrakech). The husband and wife claim the Foaming Bath Gel has the longest-lasting bubbles arounddifficult to substantiate, but we can say the stuff has a light touch and there's no oily film on you once you get out. Need we mention it's a lot cheaper than business class? 9 oz. for $28 at Henri Bendel, 212-841-9400.

Maybe the remarkably un-p.c. name of Fabrice Mahabo's upscale makeup line for women of color, black Up, has to do with the fact that he's based in Paris. But otherwise, Mahabo's firing on all cylinders with this vast, two-year-old collection tailored to women of Asian, African, Latin and Indian descentnow finally available in the U.S. Mahabo's pigment-infused purples and metallics aren't about looking natural (though, sure, he's got nudes) so, for example, the Floraison palette (three satiny violet powders and a metallic white highlighter) will stay vivid on super-dark skin. Since lily-white BD has forever been on the hunt for a purple eye that doesn't wimpily fade to plum, we're all aboard. Does this mean we got soul? $35 at www.blackup.com

And finally, a sop to just the womenfolk and any of their drag queen friends seeking a dewy, natural-looking lip-cheek combo. Delux Beauty, the only makeup artist line we know of to successfully combine retro-cuteness with grown-up polish, has already done well with their Junior Duosteeny little complementary pairings of slick lip gloss and unusually blendable cheek color (most liquid blushes, sadly, are anything but). The latest duo is Flirty Berry, which combines a stain-y red gloss with a pretty, peachy partner. "Flirty"-anything usually sets our teeth on edge, but it's the right word to use here. Put this on, ladies, and you might even bat your eyes at your drag queen pal. $20 at www.sephora.com.

Hinterview Fabien Baron—graphics guru, branding visionary, multitasking myth-maker—can do more in 15 minutes than just about anyone. So it was no great surprise when news spread earlier this year that he'd been named editorial director of Andy Warhol's Interview. At his new West Village digs, he opened up to Hint about everything from his redesign of the magazine to his designs on the White House.
Shoptart You might think, given his collaboration with leather-goods house Schott, that Jeremy Scott is going butch. After all, Schott created the biker jackets worn by Marlon Brando and James Dean. But no, that manly legacy is given a swishy twist, like this rococo tea print of treasure trolls in pastoral repose. Also this month: Marni, Stella McCartney, Tom Binns and more. |
