Balenciaga's classic City bag has long been the accessory for the posh-meets-mosh crowd. But while it couldn't single-handedly rescue CBGB, proceeds from the sale of this two-tone version at Barneys—which, as we reported in Shoptart, is going freako for eco this holiday season—will help save polar bears through Greenpeace's Project Thin Ice.
Lowdown: Black and white suede, loaded with zippers and steel studs.
Price: $1595
At: Barneys New York, 660 Madison Ave, 212-826-8900

Laura and Kate Mulleavy's Rodarte collection for spring was their most delicate to date, but the slavish fans of Japanime and Buffy couldn't help but throw in a few hardcore pieces—whip-worthy leather gloves, for instance. "We needed that surreal and sinister part of the look," say the sisters, "like cat claws."
Lowdown: Made in Paris. Also look for gloves made with hand-blown glass flowers, in collaboration with Mark Walsh Leslie Chin.
Price: $550
At: Dover Street Market in London and Colette in Paris.

Where some kicks seem stuck in the past, Pierre Hardy's whiz and whoosh with geometric, futuristic flair. Take, for example, his new Colorama hi-tops, which bear more than a passing resemblance to Balenciaga's Lego-bright sports stilettos. Oh yeah, he designed those, too. "The way I work is abstract," he tells us, "I try to bring an idea to its maximum intensity."
Lowdown: Available in men's (seen here) or women's.
Price: $440
At: Pierre Hardy's store in Paris, Dover Street Market in London, Isetan in Tokyo and Barneys New York.

Music man Michel Gaubert is taking the world of digital back to its analog glory with MG, a retro cassette-printed range of bags for Longchamp. While the eight pieces—which range from a Nano cover to a jumbo carryall on wheels—are suited to a DJ's transient lifestyle (for Michel, that could anything from a Chanel fashion show in Paris to a Gucci store launch party in Moombai), the possibilities are endless.
Lowdown: Made of coated cotton canvas.
At: Colette from December 3, Longchamp boutiques from the end of January.

His graduation collection (Central St Martins) was snapped up by Dolce & Gabbana and he's freelanced for Louis Vuitton. Now British-born, Australian-raised designer Richard Nicoll—whose sculptural spring collection in London had us glued to our seats—has teamed up with his Aussie mates at Ksubi to create sunglasses inspired by early 20th-century futurism.
Lowdown: In three styles with black, white or clear plastic frames.
At: Ksubi locations.

Hint Shop If Rad Hourani were writing this blurb, it would be over already. That's because, for the soon-to-explode French-Canadian designer, it's all about extreme minimalism. Thus, the concept behind this one-size-fits-all, unisex, sleeveless T-shirt—printed with the dates and times of a calendar—is that it can be worn by anyone, anytime. |
