| Feb 06: Here at Hint, we love all kindsand karatsof sparkly stuff. We're especially fond of Cartier, the mother of all bauble brands. But did you know it's also a major supporter of contemporary art and design through its eponymous foundation? Housed in a lustrous, fittingly jewel-like glass-and-metal structure by Jean Nouvel on Paris's Boulevard Raspail, the twenty-year-old Fondation Cartier has been entrusted with presenting the work of established and lesser-known living artists from a variety of disciplinesi.e. painting, video, design, photography, fashionand parts of the world, with a soft spot for African, American and Japanese creators. It also runs an award-winning website that extends the venue's busy programming into cyberspace, complementing the exhibitions, lectures, performances and other events with artist interviews, bios, behind-the-scenes tours and other fun materials. In addition to providing information on current and upcoming exhibits (a Juergen Teller show opens in March), the foundation's online home lets visitors revisit some of the groundbreaking shows the center has hosted over the years, including those devoted to Takashi Murakami, Marc Newson, Jean Paul Gaultier, Herb Ritts, Matthew Barney and Issey Miyake. You love its diamonds, but Cartier's foundation rocks.
