Yuima Nakazato

Shoe Stopper

Yuima Nakazato wants to make shoes that fit like a traditional Japanese kimono. In theory, at least. For his spring collection, held during Japan Fashion Week, the Antwerp Royal Academy graduate (who also shows in Paris) took a flat circle of leather and transformed it into a pair of bat-out-of-hell boots by way of zippers and origami. As no runway show could do these otherworldly kicks justice, a bronze-painted model was called upon to slither and writhe on the spotlit floor. The slinky chain-mail that completed the look was handmade using the designer's signature “metal knit” technique that treats metal like fabric. The look is like Memoirs of a Geisha-meets-Predator—and yes, we're a little scared.
