Kokeshi dolls by Becky Kemp

Cultural Icons as Kokeshi Dolls

The refashioning of fashion designers and artists as adorable little dolls continues. The traditional Japanese craft of kokeshi — limbless, emotionless, wood-carved figurines — is alive and well, as practiced by Becky Kemp, aka Sketch.

The English artist applies the tadpole treatment to cultural icons — Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo — who've never looked more kawaii. But beware: demand is high for her custom creations.
