Helmut Newton

Hint Tip: Helmut Newton

As film gives way to the digital revolution, the photographs of Helmut Newton only grow more compelling—slick and steamy, stunning in simplicity, equally influenced by art and erotica. Now Paris, the city where he lived in the 1960s and worked for clients including Vogue Paris, is welcoming the late artist home with his largest tribute yet.

The large-scale retrospective features more than 200 prints and will take place at the city’s equally outsized Grand Palais. Though the photographer made a career out of elevating beautiful women to glamazon goddesses, the show reminds viewers that the legendary lensman was more than a fashion snapper with photographs from all aspects of Newton’s long and provocative career. The exhibition, which runs from March 24 to June 17, will display Newton’s work thematically, which sections devoted to fashion, nudes, portraits, sex and humor.

For today’s digital cowboys and snapshot shutterbugs, the exhibition will be a masterclass in the basics of lighting, shadow and composition. Proving that true talent is timeless, no Photoshop needed.
