It seems the over-the-top branding of Fashion's Night Out has spilled over into the art world. Luis Gispert's new photographic series, Decepción, which opens the same night at Mary Boone Gallery, takes the notion of appropriated luxury to all new levels. The artist's photos of Cadillacs and Escalades upholstered in the finest counterfeit Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Burberry—you can thank the fanatical car culture of Miami for these very real interiors—evoke a color-saturated, logo-laden realm where reality has nothing on fantasy, and where bigger and bolder is better.
To take his car imagery one step further, Gispert added his own layer of customization, juxtaposing his automotive subjects against landscapes that he took in such disparate locales as Dubai and New Jersey. The result is a body of work that is part homage, part anthropological study, and totally compelling.
Decepción, opens September 8, 5-7 pm, Mary Boone Gallery, 745 5th Avenue @ 57th Street, NYC
