Sound System: Iris Van Herpen Couture Fall 2016

Sound waves — in particular, the rippling shapes they make when graphed — informed Iris Van Herpen's couture collection today.

The Dutch designer — who's known for her artisanal, naturalistic approach to design and who has several pieces in the Manus x Machina exhibit currently on view at the Metropolitan in New York — closed the show with a stunning 3D dress made entirely of handblown glass bubbles.

A single repetitive sound has a mesmerizing reductive quality, here amplified by Japanese musicians Kazuya Nagaya, who created a circular formation around the runway with small bowls producing an audible calm.
