The director, critic and icon of French New Wave has been an endless source of existential inspiration for generations. Fashion folk, too, have fawned over his effortless, black-and-white cool. Most recently, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte released a special T-shirt design for the 50th anniversary of his iconic masterpiece, Breathless. But the notorious anti-Hollywood auteur, who's not exactly a fan of attention, is a perennial no-show at awards shows. Currently, he seems intent on eluding the Academy itself, which has been trying to notify him of an honorary Oscar. The Hollywood Reporter notes that after numerous attempts at locating him, the impish filmmaker is nowhere to be found. The Academy has even posted this missing person flyer, itself a tribute of sorts.
