The World According to Stephen Jones

Like any eccentric artisan, Stephen Jones is fascinated by history. The merry milliner and Anglophile finds inspiration in everything from Britain's neoclassical architecture to those romantic poets, with their tight bonnets and loose turbans. Currently on view at the glorious Bowes Museum outside London, he's assembled items from his personal hat collection and given the exhibit the rather provocative name From Georgiana to Boy George. Here, Jones gives us his unique perspective on Georges Boy and King, Elsa Schiaparelli and the Queen's upcoming Diamond Jubilee...

Tell us about the show, Stephen. It sounds fantastic.
It's a collection of hats from Georgiana to Boy George that I've collected over the last 30 years. I've always loved Georgian neoclassicism. It's in the Bowes, a museum built in the 17th century. Basically one branch of the family got the title and the other branch got the money. The guy who got the money went to Paris with an Englishwoman, and stuffed this mansion full of amazing paintings, antiques and furniture.

What makes a Georgian hat Georgian?
A Georgian hat has a very elegant line. Most of the old buildings in London are Georgian, built around 1750. They're the nice neoclassical ones, with really beautifully proportioned rooms. But then when it gets into the next era, Victorian, it gets gothic and really itsy bitsy.

Interesting to have Boy George in the title of your show. You two go way back.
Yes, here's a funny story about George. I used to have this little minivan. One day I was driving around Parliament Square and George was singing in the back of my van. George has got the most exquisite singing voice and I believe there's no recording that sounds as good. It's unbelievable. I remember telling him he should be a singer. He said, "Oh, I'd really like to, but I haven't got the confidence." How things have changed!

Our latest up-and-comer shot to the model stratosphere last season with castings at Prada, Chanel (twice!), Hermès, Haider Ackermann, and Maison Martin Margiela. The Slavic beauty is just starting to make a splash in print, and we have no doubt that a bevy of photographers will be rushin' for the Russian this season. We caught up with Zen—an abbreviation of her actual name, Zenia Sevastyanova, not a self-proclamation—and learned all about her hopes, her hands, and her most embarrassing casting moment...

What's your favorite physical feature?
I don't have one. It's about overall balance and inner grace in a person. I do pay a lot of attention to hands though.

What's the strangest compliment you've received about your looks?
You're so attractive, you look like a boy.

What's the best advice you've gotten from another model?
Never be late.

When you're walking down the runway, what's going through your mind?
Storm on the inside, peace on the outside.

What's your diet during Fashion Week, and what do you eat immediately after?
Fish and greens, no carbs. Immediately after I eat something delicious, since it ends in Paris. Crepes with nutella and coconut.

If you weren't modeling, what would you be doing?
Same as now. Painting, drawing, making clothes or the opposite, I would be a journalist or a chemist, or pursue architecture.

What's the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to you at a casting?
I had an eye twitch while getting a snapshot.

What's the best city to work in and why?
New York, for the creativity, the amount of talented people and never knowing what to expect.

What would you ask for if you were granted one wish?
I ask for wishes every day and they all came or will come true.

What's your dream job in modeling?
Balmain campaign. Somewhere like Bali, the Maldives or other exotic place.

Something Different: I Love Dust for KARL

Here's a novel way of keeping with the Karlisms. The British collective I Love Dust—an ironic reference to their basement work area, not to anything illicit—has partnered with Karl Lagerfeld's KARL label on a capsule collection of limited-edition T-shirts inspired by the living trademark's off-the-cuff witticisms. The fours styles include a sketch of a leather glove, a trompe l'oeil shirt-front echoing his flashy lapels, and two others that use letters and graphics to create his name and famously shaded face. And while we're pretty sure "Chic is a kind of mayonnaise" is not one of those witticisms, but an accidental mash-up emblazoned on his forehead in this pic, one can never be absolutely certain with Karl Lagerfeld.

Available from May 31st on Karl.com, at the KARL pop-up store on Bleecker Street in New York and at Colette in Paris.

Tilda Swinton Covers Candy

Spanish editor Luis Venegas’s cult magazine Candy has featured some eye-catching covers in its first few issues, with James Franco in drag and Chloë Sevigny posing as Terry Richardson. Now in its fourth issue, the world’s “first transversal style magazine” has taken its trans theme less literally with a liqueur-sweet shot of Tilda Swinton transformed into a retro-futuristic cabaret diva with a flowing mane of red curls.

Though the actor is best known for her own brand of androgynous dressing, here, wrapped in custom gold lamé, she gives the perfect frontage for what’s dubbed the Extra Extravagance Issue. Inside, Swinton poses as a variety of über-glam figures for photographer Xevi Muntané, while other editorials feature pregnant men in S&M gear by Steven Klein and a recreation of Nan Goldin photos by David Armstrong, featuring the lovely Marcel Castenmiller.

Playtime with Comme des Garçons

In case you happen to be in the market for an obscure new summer fragrance, you're in luck. Comme des Garçons, has just released three new versions of their iconic unisex Play perfumes. The concept: no concept. Which isn't to say there isn't a concept, because there is one. It's no concept. Got it?

But like a family of bickering brothers, each scent does carry a distinctly different personality, with formulations reflecting the namesake color of each. Play Red contains red mandarin, cinnamon, pink peppercorn and red cherry accord, while Green Play is made up of a grassy blend of mint nanah, lime, basil and vetiver. Black Play, fittingly, is the most intense of the trio, with black pepper, violet, black tea, incense and tree moss. And if the cult status of Comme's other stable of fragrances are any indication, you'll be fighting off a lot more than siblings from swiping your bottle.

At Dover Street Market in London and Dover Street Market beginning today

If you crossed Marie Antoinette with an early-career Debbie Harry, you'd end up with one pissed-off pastel punk rocker—or Chanel's resort 2013 show.

Shown yesterday in the gardens of Versailles, Karl Lagerfeld's vision proved to be one of his more provocative in recent seasons. When you're talking about a man who has shipped in actual icebergs for a runway set, that's saying a lot.

This time around the clothes did all the talking as models sporting helmet haircuts, some with long bow-accented ponytails, strutted around the Palace's spouting fountains in an eye-popping array of sugar-hued denim, tweed and ruffled lace. And though some ensembles almost veered into period costume territory, this was quickly tempered by tough-girl accessories such as platform creepers that accompanied most looks, statement cuff jewelry and cross-slung bags as M.I.A. pumped through the speakers.

As the Kaiser later said of the show, this was "Coco rock, not Rococo." That was made quite clear as the girls sauntered along, hands shoved in pockets with double-C beauty marks, reminding us of that original good girl gone bad.
