LC: How many times have you crashed and burned from exhaustion?
NK: Many, and I still do, but you just have to pick yourself up on the other side and move on. There was one Christian Dior shoot that was particularly taxing, the one with Angela Lindvall and a pink Cadillac. It lasted six or seven days and nights. It was physically exhausting but Angela was a trooper and went all the way through it. In your teens you can last all night with no problem, but I've had this lifestyle for about 20 years and I know that sooner or later you have to start pacing yourself. Now I have three children that want all my time, which is fine, they deserve it. I still burn out two or three times a year, but I just have to go on.
LC: Do you recuperate with personal work?
NK: No. All of the work I do is personal. When clients take me on, it's to increase their sales, to be number one in their markets, and I regard it as a personal challenge. I take lots of snapshots of my children and family but I don't look through the camera, I just blast at them. When I look into the camera, I start to compose and select. I just want to get the moment.
