LC: (looking at portfolio) This shoot blew me away when I first saw it in Kate Betts' first Harper's Bazaar [left]. RB: It was very sexy. I'm trying to tone that down a bit. I'm interested in things not as overtly sexy as that. It's too 'Christmas tree' for me, although obviously the shoot was about short skirts. LC: What shoots are coming up? RB: I'm about to shoot for Visionaire and W. I've turned down a lot of magazines, though I can't say which ones. LC: Did you turn them down for creative or money reasons? RB: Both, but mostly creative. Money is important but it can't become too powerful in decision-making. I charge a lot to shoot editorial in magazines, especially when retouching is involved and retouching is involved on a daily basis. LC: Are you a retouching wizard or do you farm it out? RB: I farm it out to one person and I'll only work with that one person. He's almost the closest person in my team. Retouching is nearly as important as photography these days. It's a comparable component to hair and make-up. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 |
