Hint pays attention to retail

After spending the better part of two decades near the top at Balmain, Christian Dior, Lacoste and Jean Paul Gaultier, then five years as chief designer of Kenzo, the 42-year-old Gilles Rosier has finally cut the corporate cord. Well, he's had his eponymous line since 1996, but this spring marks the first time the Frenchie devotes himself to it on a full-time basis, which means muttering those two nearly impossible words to say to a steady paycheck: "I quit." A huge fan of the dance, Rosier has since designed costumes for numerous productions, and it shows with this theatrical white collar dress, flouncy and free among a collection of otherwise smoky, Dietrich-style tuxes. Seems Rosier is still married to his job. In Paris at Onward, 147 Blvd St. Germain, 75006, +33 01 55 42 77 56, and in Boston at Louis Boston, 234 Berkeley Street 02116, 617-262-6100.

How better to preserve a dearly departed legend than with plastic? The quizzically-named online shopping heaven Yoox.com bids a pixilated arrivederci to Tom Ford with "Bye Bye Tom," an e-commerce tribute to the man who walked away from it all after ten years of dutiful service. Virtually anything you've ever wanted from recent Gucci and YSL collections (and that wish list grows quickly when you get to the Italy-based site) is here in a dizzying selection of over 350 items for both sexes. We're certain the new Gucci iPod case will soon be available, but given the large amount of traffic the sale is experiencing, just be glad your only push-and-shove is that of your credit card in and out of your wallet.
Now you don't have to tuck your napkin into your poitrine to protect it from the cigarette you're so flagrantly flaunting but forgot to ash. This strapless leopard-print dress, with little sweeping front frills, can do it for you. And any number of other ruffled organza concoctions from Ungaro can, too, thanks to its designer Giambattista Valli, who's keeping the venerable label's frou-frou tradition alive. We always love fashion that can clean up after us. Jewelry by Cartier. Emanuel Ungaro, 792 Madison Avenue, 212-249-4090 and Ungaro boutiques worldwide. -SA
