From Bernhard Willhelm's bear essential to Chanel's social climbing boots,
Hint pays attention to retail
Like a stylish Faith Popcorn, Comme des Garçons' high priestess of cerebral fashion, Rei Kawakubo, keeps on-trend by reading the culture and reinterpreting it in her own inimitable fashion. Kawakubo's collection for Spring 2002 was a timely enumeration of the ways in which clothing strikes a balance between sweetness and chic, with number-print skirts paired with voluminous versions of the peasant blouse. But unlike Tom Ford's sultry serfs at YSL, Kawakubo wants her working girls to dress like angels of the avant-garde. At Barneys New York and Comme des Garçons, 520 W. 22nd Street, NYC, 212-604-9200
'The Future, Now and Then' is the idea behind Bernhard Willhelm's demented Raver Bear bag. Willhelm's take on New Wave and rave culture is in tune with the current electro-pop craze, and—unlike other cutesy stuffed-animal sacs on the market—this stuffed bear is no-parts cuddly. $195 at Seven New York, 180 Orchard Street, NYC, 646-654-0156
Not all career cross-over attempts by models blow like an intern. Belgian beauty Anouck Lepere was bent out of shape over the lack of exotic earrings for the non-pierced, so she decided to take matters into her own hands, resulting in a limited collection of sculptural pieces fashioned almost exclusively from silver. From $125 at Barneys New York, 660 Madison Avenue, 212-826-8900 and Colette.
