Hint pays attention to retail

After several agonizing delays, Dior Homme has finally moved in among neighbors Jil Sander, Chanel and YSL with the opening of its first New York boutique and its fourth worldwide. Micro-supervising the shop's design, Hedi Slimane himself created the futuristic, high-sheen, black-and-white world that is galaxies removed from the adjacent Galliano boutique. Lacquered surfaces and right angles dominate the narrow space, but step into the fitting rooms and the lines dissolve into a dizzying op-art wall design by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, while a sound system emits the eerie sound of a pulsating heart. Or try one of the padded black leather "sonic cells" with built-in, techno-blasting speakers, undoubtedly the coolest shoe-fitting seats in town since Rem Koolhaas's jelly cushions for Prada. If Karl Lagerfeld, a sexagenarian, were tapped by a wand and suddenly transformed into the jeune fille that he is at heart, he would no doubt wriggle his way into the frothy creations he whips up for Chanel, if he hasn't already. Who could blame him? The house is wildly coveted by everyone from gamines to grannies, drag queens to First Ladies, with spring proving to be yet another insta-classic. Along with rainbow knits, tweed-trimmed trenches (try saying that three times in rapid succession) and bags in the shape of Rubik's Cubes, the collection Lagerfeld described as "a game with the Chanel identity" brims with dangerously diaphanous dresses like this flirty chiffon number, tailor made for the girl in each of us. His empire is expanding faster than you can say "stretch mark," but that hasn't stopped Marc Jacobs from launching a new home collection. The multi-tasking designer serves up a luxe-a-licious line of thick cashmere blankets, throws and floor cushions (also in patent leather and sheared mink) for spring, as well as umbrella stands, picture frames, silverware, crystal wine glasses and leather coasters—which, at $130, are the cheapest of the lot. Plans are also underway to merchandise surfboards and skateboards under the more affordable Marc by Mac Jacobs label. Available at Marc Jacobs locations in New York and San Francisco.

Each season Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren strike gold with their women's collections, in part by dressing girls in exaggerated men's-style pants and button-ups. So it should come as no surprise that the Dutchmen have finally launched a proper men's line for spring, Viktor & Rolf Monsieur. Modeled by the designers themselves when it debuted last year in Paris, the collection aims to shock with flower print clamdiggers, Miami Vice-style suits worn with tees and track suits paired with clownishly wide ties. But get past the freak-show image they've cultivated over the years and you'll find plenty of practical pieces, too, like run-of-the-windmill jackets, tanks, pull-overs and drawstring pants. Go Dutch at Barneys New York, 660 Madison Ave, 212-826-8900.
