Hussein Chalayan graduated from London's Central St Martins in 1993 with a groundbreaking presentation of garments he buried in the earth to see how they would decompose. What was most uncovered in that landmark collection was a designer with the heart of an artist, but the brain of a scientist. As well-versed in anthropology and philosophy as he is in design, the twice-crowned British Designer of the Year shot to fashion fame with a clear and systematic mission: to put the creative process itself on view. And now it is again in a two-floor showcase at the Groninger Museum near Amsterdam, where the Turkish-Cypriot's most important sartorial studies will be in view from April 17 to September 4. Here, an early glimpse of the installations, photographs and video work in Chalayan's first major solo exhibition.
